April visit to Bruntingthorpehttp://www.afc.co.uk//about-us/news-and-events/april-visit-to-bruntingthorpe.aspx@updateDatehttp://www.afc.co.uk//about-us/news-and-events/april-visit-to-bruntingthorpe.aspxUnbelievably the TAFS and METARS were giving CAVOK for the afternoon fly-out to Bruntingthorpe.

6 club Warriors, the Dakota , plus 3 privately owned aircraft joined us for the flight to Bruntingthorpe, 27 of us in total.

We were picked up from our aircraft and transported by mini bus across the race track where 5th Gear were filming some very fast cars, by David Walton owner and operator of Bruntingthorpe. After paying our £10 landing fee we descended on the airfield Diner, for a very good lunch.

After lunch we wandered around the collection of Cold War jets, we were very lucky to be met by some of the men who work on the collection and they were only too willing to open up the cockpit of the Victor and the Guppy and allow us to wander around. We even got to peek into the Nimrod that had arrived the previous day before being transported back to our aircraft via a couple of VC10's.

A very good afternoon out.

March Midweek Fly-out to Sywellhttp://www.afc.co.uk//about-us/news-and-events/march-midweek-fly-out-to-sywell.aspx@updateDatehttp://www.afc.co.uk//about-us/news-and-events/march-midweek-fly-out-to-sywell.aspxThe first of the monthly midweek fly-outs got off to a rather indefinite start as the current weather consisted of poor visibility and rain (which wasn't on the TAFs for that time). But as per the TAFs the visibility improved and the rain stopped and all the aircraft launched to make the most of the weather window before the forecast rain was due to arrive.

5 club Warriors, the Dakota and 2 Eurostars made the flight to Sywell landing on the newly licenced concrete runway 21R. The crew then had a rather longer lunch than anticipated in the Aviator Hotel looking out over our fleet and the airfield.

After lunch a well spaced out departure (all luck, no planning) was made for the flight back to Wycombe, before the rain arrived.

G-ODAK G600http://www.afc.co.uk//about-us/news-and-events/g-odak-g600.aspx@updateDatehttp://www.afc.co.uk//about-us/news-and-events/g-odak-g600.aspxThis year's AeroExpo Europe saw the culmination of a six month project by Airways Flying Club to fit a glass cockpit to G-ODAK their Piper Dakota aircraft. This project was a demonstration of the first Garmin 600 glass cockpit to be fitted to a customer aircraft in Europe. The work to design, install and test the new computer system was a joint project between the Airways Flying Club and Lees Avionics based at Wycombe Air Park and Farnborough Airport.

Harry Lees, MD of Lees Avionics said; "This project began for us following a demo of Garmin's new cockpit technology in February 2009. Since then we've invested over 200 hours to design this new glass cockpit for the Dakota, plus approximately 160 hours refitting G-ODAK."

G-ODAK Cockpit

The project saw the Airways Flying Club Chief Flying Instructor, John Hartill, become a CAA approved Test Pilot in order to certify the cockpit design as safe and fit for use. John Hartill, said; "The installation of a computerised glass cockpit is an important milestone for Airways Flying Club. Modern airliners make use of this technology and professional pilots are expected to be familiar with the technology when they begin their career, they can now begin this familiarisation at the start of their training with the clubs new facilities."

More information about the G-ODAK refit can be found in the article " Garmin G600 - Glass Retrofit" featured in Flyer Magazine Summer 2009.
