Climb when ready
Once you've gained a Private Pilot's Licence you may want to go one step further and learn how to fly at night or in poor visibility when you have to navigate by instruments alone. You may want to go even further and learn how to teach others. We have the staff, equipment and expertise to help you achieve all of these ambitions.
Night Flying - Generally air conditions are relatively calm and this gives you the sensation of gliding over the lights below. A night rating qualification can be added to you licence following a 5 hour night training course.
IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions Rating) - An IMC Rating allows you to fly in poor weather conditions when you would be grounded if you held a basic PPL. To obtain an IMC Rating you need a minimum of 15 hours dual instruction including at least 10 hours flying 'under the hood' to simulate instrument flying conidtions. You will also need to pass a flight test and sit a written exam.
Multi-Engine Rating - You need at least six hours of dual training in engine failure procedures and asymmetric flying techniques, including two and a half hours dual training under normal flight conditions. A further seven hours ground training will be required. You will also need to pass a flight test and a written paper.
Instructor Rating - You need at least 150 hours flying experience to start you instructor training. A Flight Instructor course consists of 30 hours of flight instruction plus 125 hours of ground school. After qualifying as a Restricted Instructor you may then take a five hour instruments instructing course to enable you to give IMC tuition. Later you may progress to become an unrestricted Flight Instructor. Find out more about FI(R).
Aerobatics - If the aerobatics experience is your bag we can teach you this, too (in our ex military de Havilland Chipmunk) whilst also enjoying the fun of flying in a tail-wheel aircraft.
