Flight Instructor Rating FI(R)

The Flight Instructor Rating FI(R) course will provide you with the skills to teach new students how to fly.  You'll need at least 150 hours flying experience to begin, then a combination of practical flying training along with classroom based ground school.

Minimum Requirements

FI(R) Pre-Course Entry Requirements

An applicant must satisfy the course pre-entry requirements:-

  • Have at least a CPL(A) or completed at least 200 hours of flight time of which at least 150 hours shall be as PIC if holding a PPL(A).
  • Meet the knowledge requirements for a CPL(A) as set out in Appendix 1 to JAR FCL 1.470.
  • Have completed at least 30 hours on SEP powered aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test.
  • Have completed at least 10 hours instrument flight instruction in aeroplanes of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a flight simulator or FNPT II.
  • Have completed at least 20 hours of cross-country flight as PIC of aeroplanes, including a flight totaling not less than 540 km (300 nm) in the course of which full stop landings at 2 different airfields shall have been made.
  • Have passed a pre-entry flight test based upon the proficiency check as per JAR FCL 1.240(b) within the 6 months preceding the start of the course. The flight test will assess the ability of the candidate to undertake the course.

 

Ground Training

125 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction.

The ground training will consist of tutorials, teaching practice, progress tests and directed self study.

During this part of the course the student instructor will be taught the principles of teaching and learning, practice giving pre-flight briefings, long briefings as well as lectures on the PPL ground subjects.

Flight Training

30 hours dual instruction, of which 5 hours may be mutual flying (where two student instructors fly together to practice flight demonstrations)

The flight training will be carried out in the Piper Warrior, with the spinning element of the training being conducted in the de Havilland Chipmunk.
